FAQ Overview

On this page you will find answers to some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about MotionX-GPS Drive. We hope this FAQ will help you better understand MotionX-GPS Drive, and address any concerns or issues you may have with our product. If you have any further questions, please use the support form below to contact our team.

Top questions:

Q1. "Can I use a bluetooth headset to listen to Voice Guidance?"

A1. The iPhone should send the voice guidance audio to any device which can normally be used to listen to your iPod music. For bluetooth devices, this is typically limited to stereo bluetooth A2DP compliant devices, the 3.5 mm audio jack and auxiliary input devices which use the 30-pin dock connector. We're not aware of any monaural BT headsets which can be used for this purpose.

Q2. "In what countries can I use MotionX-GPS Drive for navigation?"

A2. Currently, the US and Canada are supported. Watch MotionX.com for future releases with more functionality.

Q3. "How much do the optional Live Voice Guidance packages cost?"

A3. Available offers may change at any time. We are committed to giving our users the best possible pricing. To view the latest offers, go to the "MotionX Settings" page and press the "View Optional Package Offers" button.

Q4. "What do I get when I purchase a Live Voice Guidance package?"

A4. You'll be able to use our Live Voice Guidance turn prompts and automatic rerouting features. You can learn more under the topic Live Voice Guidance Packages.

Q5. "What's the difference between Get Directions with Live Voice Guidance and Simulate Trip Step-by-Step?"

A5. Get Directions with Live Voice Guidance plots a route on the Maps page and uses your GPS signal to track your progress on that route using a 3D map. As you near the next maneuver (e.g. turn left), you will hear a voice prompt letting you know what to do.

Using Simulate Trip Step-by-Step, you will see your route plotted on a 2D map along with your current position, but you will not receive real-time routing with voice guidance. You can use the arrows on the map page to skip forward and back manually through each of the maneuvers, displayed on your choice of 2D map view options. See the Guidance Modes section for more information about these features.

Q6. "How do I start navigating to my destination?"

A6. After you have reached the Location Details page of a destination using one of the Search or Go To page menus (see the Selecting a Destination topic), press the green Navigate button in the upper righthand area. You then have the option of choosing Drive or Walk modes, and whether to navigate using Get Directions with Live Voice Guidance or Simulate Trip Automatically, or Simulate Trip Step-by-Step (see the topic Guidance Modes). Once you are satisfied with your selections, hit the green Next button in the upper right, and navigation will begin.

Q7. "Does MotionX-GPS Drive require a cellular data connection?"

A7. You must have a data connection to calculate routes and download maps, although you do not necessarily need a constant connection while following the route. Maps are precached several miles ahead of you along the calculated route.

You also need a connection to purchase and use Live Voice Guidance packages. See Network Connection for more topics regarding your cellular data connection.

Q8. "I cannot get GPS signal, do you have any tips?"

A8. Yes, there are several things you can try. Please see the GPS Signal section for information and troubleshooting tips.

Q9. "I see my next turn at the top of the Maps page, but where can I find a full list of directions?"

A9. First touch Menu, then List. This page will provide a full list of directions.

Q10. "Will the application work with an iPod touch or first generation iPhone if it is hooked up to an external GPS device?"

A10. At the time of this writing, TomTom and Magellan have the only Apple-approved external GPS modules compatible with the iPod touch and first generation iPhone. Other external receivers available currently require a jail-broken device. We will update the MotionX News Room if compatible devices become available.

Live Voice Guidance Packages

Q1. “How does the included package work?”

A1. You may activate your included package at any time with no strings attached and no subscriptions. The package period begins when you select the "Activate" button on the package details page, which is accessed by choosing Get Directions with Live Voice Guidance when calculating a route for the first time.

Q2. “How much do the optional Live Voice Guidance packages cost?”

A2. Available offers may change at any time. We are committed to giving our users the best possible pricing. For the latest offers, go to the "MotionX Settings" page and press the "View Optional Package Offers" button.

Available offers may also be found on the iTunes App Store page.

Fees are nonrecurring, just buy more time when you need it.

Q3. “If I purchased an optional package before utilizing the included package, can I still use the included package?”

A3. Yes, the included package and the optional paid packages can be stacked up. For example, if you have one day left in your included package and purchase a 30-day package, you will have 31 days of Live Voice Guidance available to you.

Q4. “Why is there a fee for Live Voice Guidance?”

A4. We must pay the suppliers of data, and therefore must charge a minimum fee. We at MotionX are committed to passing on the best possible pricing to you.

Q5. “What do I get when I purchase a Live Voice Guidance package?”

A5. You'll be able to use our Live Voice Guidance and automatic rerouting. Live Voice Guidance mode detects your current position and automatically gives you voice commands as you approach the next maneuver in your route. If your path diverges from the original route, MotionX-GPS Drive will detect this and calculate an updated route from your current position.

Q6. "Will I lose any of my purchased time if I don't start using it right away? Can my time run out while I'm not running MotionX-GPS Drive?"

A6. The expiration date of your guidance package is set when you press the "buy now" button on the package details page, and is not based on how long the application is open. You can find the expiration date and time at the top of the Settings page, accessible from the gear button in the lower right hand area of the application.

Q7. “What if I run out of time in the middle of my trip, or answer an incoming phone call?”

A7. Your navigation will be suspended and resumed without penalty, since you started the route before your guidance package expired. Keep in mind, however, that if you close MotionX-GPS Drive after your package expires (e.g. to place a call rather than answering an incoming one), you will need to purchase another guidance package to proceed with Live Voice Guidance.

Q8. "What can I do with the app if I don't buy a package?"

A8. MotionX-GPS Drive is a fully functional standalone solution without the purchase of an optional Live Voice Guidance package, which means that you can search for destinations, get driving or walking directions, and use all other features with the exception of automatic Live Voice Guidance prompts and automatic rerouting. Please see the What's New section to review the many recent feature additions to the core application.

Q9. "Is there any way to transfer the package to another iPhone?"

A9. Yes, certainly. Using the phone backup and restore feature in iTunes may be enough to set this up if you backed up your device after purchasing the package, but depending on your devices there are a few approaches to this. See the section Troubleshooting and Additional Help for tips.

Q10. “My spouse and I both have iPhones. Can we share a guidance package?”

A10. Each device running MotionX-GPS Drive requires its own guidance package. However, if you upgrade to a new iPhone, you can backup your old device and restore MotionX-GPS Drive to the new device. Any guidance package information (as of the date of the backup) should now be available on the new device.

Q11. "Do the Live Voice Guidance packages renew automatically?"

A11. No, you will never be charged for automatic renewal. You can add additional packages on an as-needed basis.

Q12. "If I were to buy (for example) 365 days, but I already bought 30 days previously, how long would my package actually last?"

A12. 365 days would be added to the remaining days in your previously purchased package. You would not lose any days that you already paid for.

Guidance Modes

Q1. "What's the difference between Get Directions with Live Voice Guidance and Simulate Trip Step-by-Step?"

A1. Get Directions with Live Voice Guidance plots a route on the Maps page and uses your GPS signal to track your progress on that route. As you near the next maneuver (e.g. turn left), you will automatically hear a voice prompt letting you know what to do. While in Live Voice Guidance mode, MotionX-GPS Drive will also automatically reroute you whenever you leave the original route.

Using Simulate Trip Step-by-Step, you will need to use the arrows on the map page to skip forward and back manually through each of the maneuvers. A voice prompt will play when you arrow to the next maneuver. Rerouting will not automatically occur, you should press the Reroute button on the Maps page whenever you want to recalculate your route.

Q2. "How are the guidance for Drive and Walk modes different?"

A2. By default, Drive guidance will tend to use the fastest route by car, and takes into account rules such as one-way streets. Walk guidance chooses the fastest way for a pedestrian, which may not be the same as guidance for a vehicle - for example, highways are generally avoided.

Q3. "Can I avoid toll roads?"

A3. Yes. From the Settings page turn Avoid Toll Roads on. This feature avoids toll roads, but does not eliminate them. If an alternate route around the toll road is not viable or if the distance around is too large, you may still be routed on the toll road.

Q4. "What does Simulate Trip do?"

A3. A simulation is a preview of the route that would be used for navigation. You can run a simulation to familiarize yourself with a route before departing.

Running a simulation is also useful if you anticipate taking a long trip through an area with low or no cellular data coverage, because the map tiles downloaded during the simulation will be stored by MotionX-GPS Drive for future use. Although we preload maps along your route as you drive, you may want to run a simulation first if you will be in a dead zone for a particularly long time. We recommend choosing the 2x simulation speed on the Settings page so that all the map tiles have enough time to download to your device.

Q5. "Why do I see an "S" on my position arrow?"

A4. When you see an "S" on the orange arrow on the Maps page, there is currently a simulation running. You can press the Stop Sim button in the lower right area of the map if you wish to dismiss the simulation and see your current position instead.

Selecting a Destination

Q1. “In what countries can I use MotionX-GPS Drive for navigation?”

A1. Currently, the US and Canada are supported. Watch MotionX.com for future releases with more functionality.

Q2. “I see a lot of different ways to find destinations. Should I use the Search page or the Go To page?”

A2. Depending on what you are looking for, there are several ways to select your desired destination. Manually entering an address is easy from either page, but there are many other options you may wish to try.

Finding businesses and services is easy from the Search page. Either select a quick category such as gas or emergency, or select the shopping cart button to browse among a wide variety of resources such as beaches, bookstores, or Wi-Fi spots. Use Search to find a business location by entering its name.

The Go To page is the quickest way to enter destination details, for example city name, zip code, or even latitude/longitude. It's also convenient way to access your Recently Found destinations, as well as any locations you may have saved such as your home address.

Q3. “How do I use the Near Me, On Route, Destination, and Specify Location tabs when browsing for points of interest or business locations?”

A3. By default, results will be shown for destinations which are closest to your current location (Near Me).

The Everywhere tab allows you to enter any city name to view top results for that area. If you previously used Everywhere search, the city entry will be preserved for future Everywhere searches until you enter a different city name.

If you are currently navigating, you can alternatively use On Route to find results along the way, or select the Destination tab to see results close to the end of your route.

Q4. “Can I save addresses, or navigate to previous destinations?”

A4. Absolutely. On the Go To page or from the address book button on the Search page wheel, you can access some of your recent or favorite destinations.

The last several destinations you selected for navigation are automatically saved under Recently Found, while those you often navigate to are saved under Frequent Destinations.

You can save any location by selecting it from search results, then using the button labeled Save This on its Location Details page. This button is found in the lower left area of Location Details, and allows you to enter a custom name for the destination, and optionally save it as a Favorite and/or your Home location. Only one address can be saved as your Home.

Q5. “What are some more ways I can set a Home location?”

A5. In addition to importing your home address from your iPhone contacts or saving a destination as your home, there are three options accessible from the My Home page found in the Go To menu. You can use your current location, enter an address, or enter latitude and longitude coordinates.

Q6. “How do I navigate to one of my iPhone Contacts?”

A6. On the Go To page or in the address book accessible from the Search page, you will see a menu item called Contacts. Select this to bring up your iPhone Contacts. Select any of your Contacts to bring up address information. Touch the address you wish to use, and MotionX-GPS will create a Location Details page using the name, address, and phone number of that Contact.

Note that you must have previously entered this information into your iPhone Contacts in order for MotionX-GPS Drive to retrieve it. From Location Details, press the Navigate button to immediately route to this address, or use Save This to save it for later navigation.

Q7. “How can I delete a previous destination?”

A7. Similar to messages in the native iPhone Mail application, you can delete an individual entry by swiping left-to-right then pressing the red Delete button which will appear over the entry. This single entry will be cleared from all Go To menus, such as Recently Found, Saved Destinations, etcetera.

If you would like to delete all Recently Found and Frequent Destinations except for those which you have already saved, use the Clear Unsaved Addresses button near the bottom of the Settings page.

Maps

Q1. “What is Night Mode and how do I enable it?”

A1. Night Mode is a low contrast road map coloring option that is more pleasant to view in low light conditions. To turn it on, go to the Settings page by pressing the gear icon in the lower righthand corner of MotionX-GPS Drive. Scroll to Night Mode and select one of three choices: Day, Night, or Automatic. Automatic Night Mode will use the time of day at your current latitude/longitude to cycle between Day and Night modes.

Aerial and Hybrid map views use satellite imagery which is naturally low contrast, so these will not be affected.

Q2. “What are my map view options, and how do I switch between them?”

A2. You can choose between various road map views: MotionX-3D Course-Up view, a MotionX-2D Course-Up view, and MotionX-2D North-Up view. Aerial North-Up and Hybrid North-Up views show satellite map imagery, and are available in Simulate Trip Step-by-Step mode and while you are not navigating.

MotionX 3D and 2D Course-Up options rotate the map depending on what direction you are headed towards, as determined by orderly changes in your GPS position. The North-Up views always display the North part of the map at the top of the screen.

You can switch between map view options by pressing the button in the lower right area of the Maps page which is marked with a calipers tool icon, then press the name of your map of choice.

If you are running MotionX-GPS Drive on an iPhone 3GS, you will see the additional option of the MotionX-2D Direction-Up view, which makes use of the device's magnetic compass to determine your heading (direction of travel).

Q3. “What are the controls for zooming and panning the 2D maps, and how do I keep my location arrow from running off the edge of the screen?”

A3. You will find buttons marked with a plus and minus in the lower left area of the Maps page; these are your zoom controls. To pan the screen away from your current location, simply swipe your finger along the map.

Panning turns off auto-centering, but you can turn centering back on by touching the crosshairs button next to the plus sign zoom button.

Q4. “Sometimes I see a blue circle with a white border appear on the map, what does this mean?”

A4. This blue lens appears over the location of the next maneuver in your route when you zoom out on the map too far to see the white maneuver arrow.

Q5. "What is the purpose of Stored Maps?"

A5. Whenever you view a map on the Maps page, that data is saved in your Stored Maps. This means that you don't have to download the same data more than once, which improves performance.

You can store up to 2GB worth of map data, or you can select a lower limit for your stored maps if you have limited memory on your iPhone. To change the allowable size of your Stored Maps cache, go to the Settings page and select from the choices under Map Performance Optimization.

Q6. "How do I make sure that I have the most current available maps?"

A6. The most current maps available are downloaded on the fly while you use the Maps page. However, you will need to clear your Stored Maps before seeing any updates to areas that you have previously viewed. To clear your Stored Maps, go to Map Performance Optimization on the Settings page and press the Clear Stored Maps button. This will delete all previously viewed maps and enable MotionX-GPS Drive to get the latest data.

Navigating

Q1. “How do I start navigating to my destination?”

A1. After you have reached the Location Details page of a destination using one of the Search or Go To page menus (see the Selecting a Destination topic), press the green Navigate button in the upper righthand area. You then have the option of choosing Drive or Walk modes, and whether to navigate using Get Directions with Live Voice Guidance, Simulate Trip Automatically, or Simulate Trip Step-by-Step (see the topic Guidance Modes). Once you are satisfied with your selections, hit the green Next button in the upper right, and navigation will begin.

Q2. “What does it mean when Live Voice Guidance says to proceed to the highlighted route?”

A2. On the Maps page, you will see a blue line highlighting the road, starting at your current position. You need to orient yourself so that you can proceed along this route. MotionX-GPS Drive can track your "heading" (direction that you are headed towards) once you start to move along the route, and can give more specific instructions such as "Turn Left Now" from this point onward.

Q3. “I see my next turn at the top of the Maps page, but where can I find the full list of directions?”

A3. First touch Menu, then List. This page will provide a full list of directions.

Q4. “How do I get a quick voice update on my next maneuver?”

A4. Immediate voice updates, or "Guidance on Demand" as it is termed, is accessed by pressing the silver speech ballon button in the upper left corner of the screen. If one of the guidance modes is currently in use, you will hear a voice update telling you your next maneuver and how far away it is from your current position.

Q5. “How does Live Voice Guidance help me get back on route if I miss a turn?”

A5. When navigating while using Live Voice Guidance mode, MotionX-GPS Drive will detect your current position and provide you with rerouting instructions to either get you back on track after a missed maneuver, or to proceed on an alternate route if you get far enough from the initial route. You will hear the voice say "rerouting" when it is updating the route.

Q6. “How can I quickly recalculate a route if I get off course when using Simulate Trip Step-by-Step?”

A6. When navigating with Get Directions mode there is a Reroute button next to the calipers button in the bottom right area of the Maps page. Press Reroute whenever you wish to calculate a new route to the same destination from your current position.

Q7. “With manual directions, how do I move from one maneuver to the next on the Maps page?”

A7. When you use Simulate Trip Step-by-Step, you should use the up and down arrows displayed on the left hand side of the Maps page to see the next or previous maneuver. GPS positioning is not utilized when using Simulate Trip Step-by-Step mode.

When using any of the MotionX Course-Up or Direction-Up map views with Simulate Trip Step-by-Step mode, pressing the next maneuver arrow button will make the map briefly center on the location of the next maneuver, before recentering on your current location (if auto-centering is active, indicated by the blue color of the crosshairs button on the Maps page).

Q8. “Do I have any routing options, such as avoiding highways?”

A8. Yes, but only when using Live Voice Guidance or Simulate Trip, because the free routing data downloaded by MotionX-GPS Drive does not contain this information. On the Settings page (press the gear button in the lower right corner), you can select between Fastest Route, Shortest Route, and No Freeways.

Q9. “How do I see and hear my navigation in kilometers instead of miles?”

A9. You can toggle between imperial and metric units using the controls on the Settings page.

Compass

Q1. “What does the blue arrow on the compass face indicate?”

A1. When you are navigating towards a destination, you will see a blue arrow on top of the compass face which points straight towards your destination (not to be confused with the direction towards your next maneuver).

Q2. “I notice there are different Compass modes on my iPhone 3GS. What are they and how do they work?”

A2. When run on an iPhone 3GS, the compass can be configured to display your direction using the built in magnetometer (digital compass) or to provide a heading using orderly changes in position from GPS location data. Press the center of the compass to toggle between the magnetic compass, the GPS satellite-based compass, and the third option which automatically selects between the two modes for you based on your current speed.

Q3. “What can I do if my 3GS shows compass interference?"

A3. The magnetometer in the iPhone 3GS is susceptible to magnetic interference from electronics and ferrous metals. If an accurate direction cannot be achieved due to interference, you will be instructed to move away from the interference and re-calibrate the iPhone 3GS by moving it in a figure 8 pattern.

Q4. “Is the magnetic compass in the 3GS used to show my direction of travel on the maps?”

A4. Yes, you should see an option for MotionX-2D Direction-Up in the maps menu, which uses the heading provided by the magnetic compass in 3GS devices. Press the calipers icon in the lower right area of the map to see your various map display choices.

Q5. “Why is the compass displaying a simulated heading?"

A5. If you have a Simulate Trip Automatically animation running, the compass will reflect the heading of the location arrow as shown in the simulation. The Compass will revert to normal when the simulation stops.

Q6. "If the compass interference popup is displayed while driving with the map set to direction up on my iPhone 3GS, how can I clear the popup without waving the iPhone in a figure 8?"

A6. Speaker magnets and the alternator in your car can cause interference with the compass built into the 3GS iPhone. If this occurs, a popup will display asking you to move the iPhone away from the interference and re-calibrate by moving in a figure 8 pattern. Since this is unsafe while driving, you can simply tap on the popup and the map will switch from Direction Up to Course Up.

GPS Signal

Q1. “What does it mean when the globe in the upper right turns blue or red?”

A1. When the globe at the upper right is blue, you have a GPS signal. When spinning red, your device is searching for a signal. When solid red, MotionX-GPS Drive is in Indoor Offline Mode. Tap the globe to switch between Indoor Offline and Outdoor Online modes.

Q2. “What happens if I lose my GPS signal while navigating?”

A2. MotionX-GPS requires a GPS signal in order to provide accurate directions. There are several factors that can contribute to signal issues. A reboot of the iPhone often resolves signal acquisition issues.

  • If indoors, in a parking garage or tunnel you may not be acquire a signal.

  • If your device is trying to acquire a signal for the first time and you don't have a cellular or WiFi network connection, it's normal for the iPhone to take up to 15 minutes to acquire a signal.

  • If your device has traveled a long distance between uses of location services, it may take up to 15 minutes to acquire a signal.

  • Try locating your iPhone near the windshield to avoid interference from the roof.

  • Some window tintings use metallic substances which may interfere with the GPS signal.

Q3. “Can I start navigating without a signal?”

A3. Yes, you will be given several choices when starting guidance without a reliable GPS signal. You can use your last known accurate GPS position as the starting point for your route, or you can choose the best estimate of your current poisition according to cellular network triangulation. A third option is for MotionX-GPS Drive to wait for good GPS signal and then automatically begin guidance.

Q4. “How can I check my signal strength?”

A4. Signal strength can be viewed from the Position page. Touch Menu, then Position to get to the Position page.

Q5. “Is there any way to improve signal strength?”

A5. GPS signals are line of sight. Metal roofs, mountains, buildings and trees can interfere with the signal. When driving, we recommend a dash or windshield mount to give your iPhone the best view of the sky.

Q6. “My position arrow on the Maps page has a "T" in it - what does this mean?”

A6. When a GPS signal is not present, your iPhone may be able to provide a rough estimate of your position using cell tower triangulation. This is indicated by a "T" in the center of the arrow.

Q7. “What can I do in MotionX-GPS Drive without GPS signal?”

A7. When a GPS signal is not present or when using Indoor Offline Mode, you can use the Search and Go To search tools, store maps by panning on the Maps page or running a Simulate This Trip route, save or edit your destinations, manage your settings and optional guidance packages from the Settings page, and play songs and podcasts from your iPod library. On a 3GS you can also use magnetic Compass features.

Q8. “Will the application work with an iPod touch or first generation iPhone if it is hooked up to an external GPS device?”

A8. At the time of this writing, TomTom and Magellan have the only Apple-approved external GPS modules compatible with the iPod touch and first generation iPhone. Other external receivers available currently require a jail-broken device. We will update the MotionX News Room if compatible devices become available.

Network Connection

Q1. “Does MotionX-GPS Drive require a cellular data connection?”

A1. You must have a data connection to calculate routes and download maps, although you do not necessarily need a constant connection while following the route. Maps are precached several miles ahead of you along the calculated route. Rerouting calculations also require your cellular network. Additionally, you need a connection to purchase and use Live Voice Guidance packages.

If you have any trouble getting navigation and maps to work, it's a good idea to check your iPhone's network connection.

Q2. “I don't have unlimited data usage. Can I cache the maps for a given route ahead of time over WiFi to save on data charges?”

A2. Certainly. If you would rather not use your data connection while driving, you can download maps along your intended route by using Simulate This Trip before driving. You can use your iPhone's WiFi connection as an alternative to your carrier's data connection.

Keep in mind that only map tiles along the calculated route will be downloaded during the simulation. If you detour from this route while on the road, map tiles will be downloaded for your current location on the fly.

Q3. “I don't have 3G in my area. Will MotionX-GPS Drive work over an EDGE network?”

A3. Yes, although the performance of MotionX-GPS Drive over the EDGE network will not be as fast. Rerouting calculations may take significantly longer, and maps will not download as quickly. However, MotionX-GPS Drive now stores map data ahead of you along the calculated route, so in most cases you should be able to see your maps.

Troubleshooting and Additional Help

Q1. “Can I use a bluetooth headset to listen to Voice Guidance?”

A1. The iPhone should send the voice guidance audio to any device which can normally be used to listen to your iPod music. For Bluetooth devices, this is typically limited to stereo Bluetooth A2DP compliant devices, the 3.5 mm audio jack, and auxiliary input devices which use the 30-pin dock connector. We're not aware of any monaural Bluetooth headsets which can be used for this purpose.

Q2. “When I enable my iPhone's ring/silent switch, should voice prompts and iPod music be muted?”

A2. As is standard for most navigation programs, voice and music will play regardless of the ring/silent switch setting. Button presses and any other sound effects will be muted, however.

Q3. “The voice guidance is too loud or too soft compared to my iPod music. Can this be adjusted?”

A3. Yes, there is now a volume slider on the Settings page in the Voice & Sound section, labeled Voice Volume. Move the slider to the left if voice guidance seems too loud compared to your music, and move it to the right if it seems too quiet. This will not affect the volume of your music or the MotionX-GPS Drive sound effects.

Q4. “Does MotionX-GPS Drive support landscape mode?”

A4. MotionX-GPS Drive 3.0 supports landscape on all pages. Download your free update today from the App Store

Q5. “I cannot get GPS signal, do you have any tips?”

A5. Certainly, please see the GPS Signal section above.

Q6. “My position appears to be inaccurate, why is that?”

A6. You may be having issues with your GPS signal, or it's possible that you are running Simulate This Trip animation on the Maps page. If you see a "T" or an "S" on the orange location arrow, these indicate poor GPS signal or simulation mode (respectively).

Q7. “I had a problem with my navigation route - can you look at it for me?”

A7. Yes, you can report your problem to us by choosing the "Report a Navigation Problem" button, found right under the Read the FAQ button on the Settings page. Find the relevant log in the list of your recent navigations, select it and fill out the short form to submit the issue to our support team.

Q8. “I have selected fastest route to my destination, but the calculated route actually takes me out of my way...how do I report this to MotionX?”

A8. Please report this using the steps for Report a Navigation Problem in Q5 above, we value your feedback.

Q9. “How can I save battery life while navigating?”

A9.

  • One suggestion is to keep it plugged into an iPhone car charger if possible while running MotionX-GPS Drive.
  • When not in use, turn off Bluetooth and WiFi as these drain your battery quickly.
  • If you don't have 3G service in your area, disable 3G networking from Settings. When 3G service isn't available and 3G networking is turned on, your battery will drain very fast.
  • Adjust your screen brightness to a lower level from your iPhone's settings.
  • Make push email occur less frequently or turn it off from Settings>Mail>Push Email.
  • When you're indoors and not searching for a satellite, touch the globe at the upper right of any page to turn off the signal search.

Q10. “I am on the Maps page but cannot see any maps - what's wrong?”

A10. Your iPhone may have lost data connectivity. Check your network connections and try again. Rebooting your iPhone may also be helpful.

Q11. “When I do a search it comes back with "no results" - what's wrong?”

A11. Possibly your iPhone has lost its data connection or recently switched between networks. Check your connectivity and try again. Rebooting your iPhone may also be helpful.

Q12. “The destination I'm looking for doesn't come up in your search results... why not, and what can I do?”

A12. Our Search and Go To results are powered by the entries in the Bing search engine. If you get no results at all, you probably don't have network connectivity at the moment. If you get many results by browsing but not the one you were looking for, see if the Search button on the Search page is more helpful (type in the name of your destination).

If you still can't find you were looking for, you may have to look up the address elsewhere and enter it manually. We would value your report of any omissions through the Send Feedback form.

Q13. “I'm trying to enter an intersection destination through the Go To page, but the results don't include the address I wanted...”

A13. For best results when entering cross street names, we suggest including the street designator (i.e. Dr, Ave, etc) and/or fill out the city field for the best intersection search results.

A15. All features should work properly in Canada. If you have any issues, please drop us a line through the Send Feedback form.

Q16. “I'm having problems purchasing or using my Live Voice Guidance package, what should I do?”

A16. To purchase a package, you'll need to use your Apple ID account login details to complete the transaction (such as when purchasing applications in the App Store). Whenever you do not have an active (not expired) package, you should be guided through the transaction process when you try to Get Live Voice Guidance. You can also initiate purchase using the View Package Offers button in Settings.

If for any reason you are having trouble obtaining or using your Live Voice Guidance package, contact support through our Submit Feedback form.

Q17. “MotionX-GPS Drive seems to be slow to respond to my input. Can this be corrected?”

A17. Typically this is caused by the iPhone running low on memory. Please reboot your iPhone by holding down the sleep/wake button on the top of the device for 5-6 seconds until a slider appears. Slide the switch to power off. To power on, briefly press the sleep/wake button.

Q18. “The iPod controls within MotionX-GPS Drive are not responding to my input. Is there a fix for this?”

A18. While this can be caused by playing unusually large playlists, it may also be an indication that your iPhone is low on memory. Under normal circumstances your iPhone manages memory correctly, but occasionally it's necessary to reboot to free up available memory. Please reboot your iPhone by holding down the sleep/wake button on the top of the device for 5-6 seconds until a slider appears. Slide the switch to power off. To power on, briefly press the sleep/wake button.

Q19. “I had to restore my iTunes backup data to another device... will my Live Guidance package still work?”

A19. If you backed up your iPhone after purchasing a Live Guidance package, when you restore your device from the backup, your expiration will be maintained.

Q20. “What if I don't have backup data from my old device - can I still use my Live Guidance package?”

A20. Yes, this can normally be arranged by submitting your issue to support using our Send Feedback form.
